couplings

wedge of family tree gift from allt for sverige / 2021

over centuries, millennia, ages

biomes, borders, continents,

language, laws, lamentations…

how many couplings arrived me here

into this spirit body self still wanting the tether

of whatever moves two bodies together

like stream into river or sun over ridge

or moon through branches past midnight during an eclipse

when all that is left to do is look through the window

for that geometric light that could be received as calculation

but feels more like a plea being born.

let me be the one who you seek in the dark.

let me be the one who cradles your prayers,

let me be the one who meets you at the ocean’s edge

where we play in the doings and undoings of living.

over centuries, millennia, ages

biomes, borders, continents,

language, laws, lamentations…

in any of those couplings was there rapture? sweetness? song?

were you under hides in the darkness of the Great North

or naked near the sun-kissed river?

were you tender with each other,

able to move beyond all you’d been taught,

to feel finger tracing forehead, nose,

lips, chin, neck, chest, navel,

the celestial gift of caress?
