. . . .we have learned to see past the stars and into the eventual darkness that accepts everything, accepts the volume of human knowledge and its stories of oppression and wonder, accepts the music of waterfalls and the silence of caves, accepts the bad hair days and the soured milk, accepts the Chinese dragons of the Lunar New Year and the fireworks of Independence Day, accepts the overdue library books and the unfound scrolls of a mother who taught a prophet to read, accepts the colors of the rainbow and the light of other suns, accepts the wisdom of Kermit the Frog and the humor of sloths and lemmings, accepts the bones of conquerors and their victims, accepts the air conditioning bills and the Styrofoam containers from the burger joint down the street, accepts the digital photos of first grandchildren and soldiers on leave and every selfie ever made, accepts the songs of Judy Garland and the migration of whales, accepts earthquakes and thunder and meat-packing plants and Barbie, accepts the ink of this pen on the page and the tree that was felled for the paper it lands on, accepts the tears of grandmothers and the crimes of priests, accepts the bags of trash in the landfill and the flutter of hummingbird wings, accepts hunger and worry and grief, accepts the bling of drag queens and the blather of politicians, accepts the china teacups and plastic water bottles, accepts the errors in history books and the poetry of women who dream.
