Words were the beginning of something but not everything. Words were the beginning of naming things and separating people and places and objects into this and that, into mine and yours, into good and bad. Words were the beginning of power. Words were the beginning of his and hers but mostly his. Words were the beginning of stories that became wealth that became kings that became countries that became dependent on free labor that became slavery that became a loss of humanity both for the slave and the master. So many losses from words. So many deaths and dismissals from words. So many illusions and lies from words. So many crucifixions, so much need for salvation from words. So many promises of heaven, so many ploys, words swallowed as poison or medicine, words underscored, words written on cardboard, words screaming for air, words tired of asking to be heard, words with a right to live that have been removed from the lexicon of human history. In the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god. Stop. Listen. Which words are waiting to save us now?
